About the Residency

The goal of the residency is to encourage and support individuals who show exceptional promise and creativity to advance scholarship and entrepreneurial projects in civic science engagement around the world.

Residents in the collective are independent scholars and social entrepreneurs working to develop new civic science (an umbrella term for informal science education, science communication, public engagement with science, community science, citizen science, etc) tools, programs, and scholarship. Residents are encouraged to learn new skills, network, and engage the collective of residents to enhance their personal and professional growth. Growth is success. Please note residents are not employees of the SRC and their year-long appointments (which can be renewed each year) are by courtesy. Ordinarily, residents have full employment elsewhere, and the residency acts as an add-on professional development opportunity to help accelerate initiatives forward.

We have 2 Residency Tracks

Scholar Track: The goal for residents on the independent scholar track is to conduct research that examines a focused research question(s) within the landscape of civic science (e.g., science policy, science communication, public engagement with science, informal science education, open science, and others). The deliverable at the end of the 1st year is a report summarizing the findings (format is flexible; video, article, dashboard, powerpoint, etc) that is published publicly. Prior experience within the field is ideal.

Founder Track: We are seeking founders of existing public science engagement, science communication, and informal science projects that they have already launched with some traction and are seeking to accelerate the growth of their initiatives by joining the SRC. The deliverable at the end of the year is publicly reporting on the KPIs from the initiative. See the list of current resident founders below.

Funding: Depending on the availability of funds, residents can apply up to a total of $2k (or more) of professional development funding across each residency year. Ultimately, the goal is for residents to acquire independent funding to fund their professional growth.

Although the application portal is open throughout the year, the best time to apply is between Jan 1 and May 31 each year since the SRC year begins on July 1. Please note that due to our limited staff capacity, we can only respond to applicants whose applications get shortlisted for further consideration.

If you are an undergraduate student looking to work with one of our residents during the summer, consider applying to our summer internship program.
